BLONDIE –
8th-10th August 2003, 8.30pm
Bursting out of New York City, Blondie fused the sounds and influences of the “Big
Apple” into dynamic, yet perfect pop music. Riding the crest of the new
wave punk era of the late 1970’s, Blondie combined punk, soul, disco
and reggae into sublime 4-minute pop masterpieces that formed the musical backdrop
to the following decade.
Originally founded in 1974 by Chris Stein and Debbie Harry, the band played
legendary venues such as Max’s Kansas City and CBGB’s with contemporaries
such as Television and Talking Heads. Blondies’ pop sensibilities were
however always apparent and alongside band-mates Clem Burke and Jimmy Destri,
they were revealed with the release of their second album “Plastic Letters” in
1977
“
Plastic Letters” produced by Mike Chapman contained the classic single “Denis” which
reached no1 in the UK, whilst the follow up album “Parallel Lines” launched
the band into super-stardom. The album went on to sell over 20 million copies
and includes such singles as “Picture This”, “Heart Of Glass” and “Sunday
Girl”.
The band continued to release records during the early 80’s but their
success was curtailed when founding member Chris Stein was diagnosed with a
devastating genetic disease and the band split in 1984.
The bands’ reformation and the subsequent release of their latest album “No
Exit” sees Blondie return to Australia to enthral a new generation of
fans whilst again entertaining their legion of original fans.

CLIVE
JAMES– 19th
September 2003, 8.00pm
Clive James is one of Australia's most famous exports, a noted poet, novelist
journalist and critic he returns to the State Theatre with long time musical
associate Pete Atkin to perform “The Words, Wit and the Music.”
Fresh from sell-out shows and critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival, the
show features Clive James wicked wit and acerbic one liners set against the
music of Pete Atkin.
As a best selling author, Clive is a born storyteller and anecdotes of his
Australian childhood, his travels and his brushes with the famous translate
freely from screen to stage. With over 30 years in the entertainment industry,
Clive James has gathered stories and tales aplenty. He has over the years developed
an art for narrative, as his legions of radio listeners will attest.
But not many people know that more than 20 years ago Clive wrote lyrics for
six albums of songs with mate Pete Atkin, (a 'near-legendary' British singer
and songwriter).
The collaboration of lyricist James and “tunesmith” Atkin has been
revived by the timely relaunch of their albums. Back on the road, their new
double act is a laid-back recap of their adventures in the music business since
the late Sixties when, as members of the Cambridge Footlights Review, they
forged a relationship that spawned six albums in the Seventies.
Pete sings the songs on guitar and keyboards and in their acoustic form, they
can be described as sounding something between Pete Seeger and Alan Price.
Some are serious and some are funny, touching on subjects such as Apollo 13,
jazz pianists, westerns and gangsters.
Clive, meanwhile intones poems on pieces of paper, with offerings that did
not make it to lyric form, and even takes a stab at a vocal number.
